Caretel Inns of Lakeland breaks ground on 20,000-square-foot expansion

Caretel Inns of Lakeland is growing and one new feature the senior living development will be what it describes as a Main Street for its residents and their guests, to be known as Penny Lane.

As part of a $5 million expansion project, Caretel Inns of Lakeland, will add nearly 20,000 square feet at its Royalton Township location near St. Joseph.

Groundbreaking took place June 7 for the expansion that will create 18 new assisted living units and eight apartments suitable for those who can live independently. The assisted living units will feature rooms with an average size of 441 square feet. Specifically, it will have six small single rooms with 290 square feet of space, three large singles with 320 square feet of space and 10 suites that range from 528 square feet to 711 square feet in size and are suitable for double occupancy.

What makes the expansion unique is the addition of the mini-downtown, says Debbie Durham, Vice President of Cartel Inns of Lakeland. Penny Lane will have a movie theater for residents and their guests, a gift shop and ice cream parlor, and a hair salon with spa features such as pedicure chairs, a massage room, hair dresser chairs and washing bowls.

Also, a 1,023-square-foot therapy space will be added to the existing therapy room so more out-patient therapy can be offered. Occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech therapy all are offered at Caretel Inns.

As the size of the development grows, so will the staff. Durham says an additional 20 to 30 people, both full- and part-time will be hired when the expansion is completed. It is anticipated work will be done within 16 months.
