Southwest Michigan's Second Wave celebrates 5 years

This week Southwest Michigan’s Second Wave turns 5.

Five years ago, I was learning how to find the homepage, how to add stories, which buttons to push so people could see them.

Then on Thursday mornings I would usually post something along the lines: It’s Thursday. Here is a Second Wave for your reading pleasure.

To celebrate five years of this routine, I did a quick poll on that same Facebook page to find out what people think of when they think of Second Wave, these days.

One reader says: “Well written and interesting reporting! Info about events and people that I want to know more about! A much needed flavor of good news!”

Another says we are, “Stepping up to fill (the ever widening) gaps in feature story reporting. I think of spotlights on the new and innovative progresses and the people who are working hard through their talents and passions.”

And a third: “Entrepreneurship, economic development... no sensationalism, just true reporting on the community.”

Thank you, for all the kind words. I am blushing. I am very grateful to the many readers who make us a part of their week. And thankful that I have the talented people working with me: Zinta Aistars and Jane Parikh who have been here from the beginning, our able craft beer contributor Jeremey Martin, and newcomers Cathie Schau, Kathi Valleii, and Mark Wedel. For most of our four years Erik Holladay created our feature pictures and the masthead that you see each time you open Second Wave. When Erik left to further his wedding photography career, Susan Andress stepped in.

When I last reflected on Second Wave I waxed philosophic about the way we are trying to provide solution oriented journalism as part of our mission.

It is gratifying to know that it resonates with readers. Please, continue to spread the word.
