Binder Park Zoo seeks new President and CEO

Binder Park Zoo in Battle Creek is seeking a President and Chief Executive Officer. This is a full-time job in management with responsibilities in developing strategy, planning and administration for a nonprofit organization with recreational facilties and services.

Job Description

Essential functions and responsibilities
• Serves as the head of the senior leadership team, to lead and motivate staff and volunteers to attain excellence in operations of the zoo.

• Ensures the operations, goals and plans are consistent with the zoo’s mission.

• Primary leadership role in fund development for the Zoo, both project-related and long term investment.

• Relates positively with diverse groups of people including guests, staff and volunteers.

• Perform within an ethical framework, build relationships, communicate effectively, foster teamwork and provide leadership to both the Zoo and the Community as a whole.

• Possess ability to work within the Carver Board Governance Model.

• Ensures the zoo operates within its annual budget and financial parameters.

• Develop and implement the strategic plan including exhibit design, long term financial planning and operational advancement.

• Represents the Zzoo locally, nationally and internationally.

    •    Set goals and priorities in performing job.

    •    Comply with all Binder Park Zoo policies and procedures.

    •    Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and leadership skills.

    •    Possess strong communication skills and the ability to present to large groups on a wide variety of subjects as pertains to the zoo’s mission.

    •    Have a passion for conservation and empathy for nature and wildlife.

    •    Be able to work independently and to plan, organize and handle multiple tasks as necessary.

    •    Work a flexible schedule and maintain presence at Zoo during weekends and holidays of the Zoo’s season.

    •    Participate within Community Groups, whether as member or board member, to ensure attainment of long term community goals


Physical and environmental demands

    •    Ability to work both outdoors and indoors, with exposure to all weather conditions, which may include wet, icy or muddy conditions and different terrains.

    •    Ability to read, speak and write English in order to fulfill job functions in an understandable way.

    •    Ability to perform job functions using the zoo’s network technology including all hardware and software programs.


Desired Skills and Experience

• Minimum of Bachelors Degree in appropriate field, graduate degree beneficial.

• Minimum of five years work experience in senior management, preferably not-for-profit.

•Possess a valid Michigan driver’s license or obtain within 90 days of employment.

•Experience and proven track record in fundraising campaigns, individual and legacy gifting, corporate sponsorships, development of grant solicitation and planned giving.

•Experience in development of planned giving program
