No lockers, no bullies and no prom make the West Michigan Virtual Academy of Battle Creek unlike the average high school. However, its students are not average, either. Then again charter school offered by Berrien Springs Public Schools is held to the same standards of any other Michigan public school.
Rudyard "Rudy" Peterson graduated from the 3-year-old Virtual Academy in May with 23 other graduates. The Kalamazoo resident is a cyclist who chose the academy because of his hectic training schedule.
Excerpt: "The virtual school helped me take my day in stages, whereas in public school I had to ride either really early or really late at night," said Peterson. Not having a prom and only seeing his friends on the weekends was not a big deal to Peterson. "I guess it’s kind of a let-down. It’s just a price to pay," he said. "It’s a bummer for someone who is a little more social than me."
