Public to get an early look at the future of Pilgrim Haven

Pilgrim Haven Natural Area near South Haven is about to open to the public to give people a sense of what is to come.

The Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy's newest natural area on Lake Michigan near will be open to the public for one day, Saturday, July 28, to give people a chance to see the recently completed design for the property. The design was based on input from more than 200 people who discussed the project with the Land Conservancy.

Pilgrim Haven is located 2.5 miles south of the City of South Haven along 18th Avenue.

There will be tours and a celebration of the receipt of the 26 acres of property and nearly 800 feet of beach frontage along Lake Michigan, a gift to the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy from the estate of Suzanne Upjohn DeLano Parish. In addition to the beach along Lake Michigan, Dyckman Creek runs through the property.

The site will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The event will feature a 3 p.m. toast and a short presentation about the gift and future of the natural area. The Land Conservancy will lead tours that will showcase the location of planned improvements, destination points, and other amenities. Cold refreshments will be available.

"Bring your family and friends," says Peter Ter Louw, SWMLC executive director. "This is an opportunity to preview what things will be and enjoy the beach and beauty Pilgrim Haven offers."
