New pharmacy offers convenience for Milwood, Edison neighbors

Previously underserved patients of the Family Health Center in the Edison and Milwood neighborhoods now have a second pharmacy closer to home.

The new pharmacy is located in the Sheridan facility, 2918 Portage Road. The Sheridan location is about a 5,000-square-foot facility with about 1,500 dedicated to the new pharmacy. The facility employs about 15 people and two are pharmacy employees.

For those with limited financial resources who purchase medication a fee scale based on income is available. The Emergency Prescription Assistance Program offered by the Greater Kalamazoo United Way also is offered.

"When people are already struggling with an illness, convenience of service is a critical way to help ease a person’s day," say Joel Murr, practice manager for the Sheridan site. "We especially hope to make life a little easier for folks in the Edison and Milwood neighborhoods."

Having both health care and pharmacy services in one spot also helps those who have limited transportation options.

At the same time, the Sheridan location hopes to build a clientele from all over Kalamazoo by offering friendly service, Murr says.

Family Health Center is a community-based Federally Qualified Health Center that provides primary medical care, dental services and behavioral health care counseling. There are six locations in Kalamazoo County.

The new pharmacy is open from 8:45 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. Monday through Thursday. There are plans to expand hours as use of the pharmacy grows.
