Kalamazoo favorites and new sounds from out of town will take the stage at the second annual
Boiling Pot Festival.
The festival has a lineup of 32 bands, so far, and more promised to be announced by mid-September.
"Each night will feature a different mix of unique artists," says Chris Walters, a representative of the event set to take place Sept. 29 to Oct. 1 at the Arcadia Creek Festival Site.
Thursday’s headiner, Steppin’ In It, from Lansing, takes country, blues and a little swing to create a uncommon blend. Their sound take in the classic days of Americana and roots music and features harmonica, fiddle and Cajun accordion, too.
The Legendary Shack Shakers from Nashville headline Friday’s lineup. They mix elements from rock, punk, and blues for a style all their own. The bans features frontman J.D. Wilkes, Duane Deniso, a former member of The Jesus Lizard, bassist Mark Robertson and Brett Whitacre, on drums.
On Saturday, Murder By Death, closes the festival with a blend of genre-bending indie rock. The band’s unconventional instrumentation and signature vocals reminiscent of Johnny Cash, have led it to perform in venues far away as Sardinia and Greece.
But music is only part of the
Boiling Pot weekend. As there was last year, the festival is an opportunity to share ideas about the future of the Kalamazoo area. And fest-goers can participate in festival-wide art projects that explore connections between the environment and local actions.
A portion of the proceeds will go toward Recovery on Water Founder and Coach Jenn Gibbons’ trip rowing the 1,500 mile perimeter of Lake Michigan in 2012 to raise awareness of the role exercise plays in fighting breast cancer.
