Northside celebrates opening of housing for seniors

Seniors have four new apartments on North Street thanks to the work of the Northside Association for Community Development.

The Northside Association for Community Development (NACD) recently held an open house for new senior housing duplexes located on the NACD campus.

The one-bedroom units are approximately 800 square feet and will be rented to low-income seniors at a discounted rate.

The duplexes were constructed to help meet the high-demand for affordable handicap accessible housing for very low income Northside seniors.

The four units, were supported by HOME Investment Partnership Program grant funds through the City of Kalamazoo and the work of Mattie Jordon-Woods, the NACD executive director, who pulled together volunteer support and discounted supplies to build the duplexes.

The four units were built for approximately $325,000. The City of Kalamazoo supplied $262,217 in HOME funds.

HOME funds made available through the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) can be used to fund a wide range of activities including building, buying, or rehabilitating affordable housing for rent or homeownership or providing direct rental assistance to low-income people, often in partnership with local nonprofit groups.

NACD also received support from Local Initiatives Support Corporation and Chemical Bank.

The Northside neighborhood is one of the oldest and largest neighborhoods in Kalamazoo. It is home to 5,800 people and is less than a half-mile from downtown.

It has a water playground, two elementary schools, more than 20 churches, at least 15 social service agencies which serve the entire county and includes approximately 150 businesses.
